“Here.”
Robert looked over his shoulder to see Carrick holding out a glass of water to him. He accepted it with a small, grateful smile and took a sip.
Officer Rayne had wasted no time in putting Christian Grey in handcuffs and marching him to the car waiting outside.
“Why didn’t he try his Compeller powers on her?” Carrick mumbled.
“I think he did. But there are special handcuffs for cases like…”
Carrick nodded without looking at Robert; his colours were a flat and miserable navy.
Grey wasn’t the only one taking an involuntary trip to the Seattle police station. Ana had gone ballistic on seeing her boyfriend being cuffed; she ended up grabbing Emily Rayne by the hair, and was arrested for assaulting an officer.
“What’s going to happen now?” asked Carrick, his voice trembling slightly.
“Well, I’m not sure. It depends whether or not Christian knows about his powers and if he’s been using them deliberately. Either way, I think he’ll be placed in a facility until they figure out what to do.”
“Robert, that night at the charity ball…if you hadn’t suggested looking for Gifts in Christian’s paternal line…” Carrick shook his head, staring at the floor. “We’d never have known about Christian. We wouldn’t even have suspected he was Gifted.”
He glanced over his shoulder; Robert followed his gaze to the living room. Grace and Mia sat side by side on one of the couches, holding hands. Elliot and Kate were perched on the other; as Robert watched, Kate placed a hand on Elliot’s shoulder and gave a small squeeze. The colours of the three Greys were a mixture of light purple, orange and yellow. Robert didn’t need his Gift to tell him they were in shock.
To his faint surprise, Mia was the one who seemed to be most in control.
“I don’t know what we’re going to say to Elliot and Mia,” Carrick said. “They didn’t even know about my Gift, let alone Christian’s.”
Robert couldn’t say anything to that. His children had grown up knowing about his power, and…
Oh, God. Michael.
He swallowed. He needed to call the number of the hospital his son was in; he didn’t even know if Michael was all right. But he wouldn’t be able to leave the Greys like this unless another member of the Agency was with them – preferably someone who actually knew about these procedures, and could tell them what to expect.
“What about when you cried out? You were clearly in pain – what happened?”
“I don’t know. Its possible Christian was trying to Compel me a bit too hard - or it might be a secondary Gift.”
“A secondary Gift?”
Robert ran a hand through his hair. “People with two Gifts are very, very rare, but they do exist. When Christian gets to the Agency, he’ll be examined by a Detector; if he does have a second Gift, the Detector should be able to tell. Hopefully.”
He looked restlessly from side to side, and then took his phone out of his pocket. “I’m sorry, Carrick, but I need to make a call. Excuse me.” He dialled the number he had been given, trying to ignore his shaking hands.
“Is Michael OK?” asked Toby, his dark brown eyes pleading silently with his father.
“He’s still unconscious, but he’s stable.”
“Do they know what caused it?” Kevin folded his arms; his brow was creased with worry.
Robert shook his head. “No – they have no idea. The doctor I talked to said he’s perfectly healthy, and there was no reason he shouldn’t wake up soon. Jay said he’ll call me as soon as that happens. He’s sitting with Michael right now. What I need you both to do is pack; we’re leaving as soon as the Agency member gets here.”
“Dad,” Toby began hesitantly, “do you think Grey did to Michael what he did to you?”
“If he did, then he’s more dangerous than I thought. But then again…maybe something just happened. If the doctors can’t explain what caused Michael to collapse, perhaps we’ll never find out. But he’s going to be OK, and for now, that’s what matters.”
Kevin and Toby stood near the SUV, watching their father say goodbye to Carrick. They had already said their farewells to Elliot, Grace, Kate and Mia.
“Goodbye, Bob,” Carrick said, extending a hand. “Have a safe drive home.”
“I will,” replied Robert solemnly as he shook his friend’s hand.
“And…thank you.”
Robert came down the steps and paused, looking at the opposite side of the road. Toby and Kevin turned to see what he was staring at. Jason Taylor stood beside Christian’s black car; he nodded his head once at Robert. Robert smiled and nodded back.
“Come on, boys. Let’s get going.”
Robert got into the driver’s seat; Kevin slid into the seat next to him, and Toby took his place in the back. Robert started the SUV and began to drive. The two younger Mendozas kept their eyes on the family standing at the house’s entrance.
“You know who would have been really great to have on this job?” Kevin asked suddenly, breaking the long silence.
“Who?”
“That guy Luke you told us about. Grey wouldn’t have stood a chance against his Gift.”
“That’s true – but Luke’s Gift does have some serious weaknesses. I think he’s in England at the moment. He’s kind of similar to Gabe Lucado – they do a sort of timeshare between US and…”
Robert’s phone rang, drawing the attention of all three Mendozas.
“Kevin, can you see who that is?” Robert’s voice was tense with anxiety. Kevin picked up the phone and studied the screen.
“It’s Uncle Jay.”
“Put him on speakerphone.”
Kevin took a deep breath; he pressed first the green button then the ‘speaker’ button. He could feel Toby’s eyes fixed on him. “Hi, Uncle Jay.”
“Kevin? Is your dad there?”
“Yeah, Jay, I’m right here. How’s Michael?”
“He’s awake; the doctor said he can go home.”
Toby and Kevin sighed with obvious relief; Robert, however, wasn’t so easily convinced.
“Just like that? And they don’t think it’s going to happen again?”
“They don’t really know what happened, but he’s perfectly fine and they say he’s made a full recovery. They can’t keep him if there’s nothing wrong.” Robert heard Jay sigh. “I’m going to take him back to my place; the doctor said to call at once if he’s feeling sick or he’s got a headache.”
“You said you found him unconscious in the garden. What was he doing out there when you had him on lockdown?”
“I asked him to find all the used mugs and put them in the kitchen. I was doing some work in the garden a few days ago and I left a mug outside; he says he saw it, went out to get it, and that was when he collapsed. Robert, I am so sorry.”
Robert leaned back against the headrest. “This isn’t your fault, Jay. I don’t blame you, and I don’t blame Michael. Look, I don’t know how long we’re going to be on the road, but we’ll be back as soon as we can. We’ll call you and Michael in an hour; is that OK?”
“OK, Bob. See you.”
“Bye.” Robert hung up, gave the phone back to Kevin and started the SUV again, driving it off into the rain.
Jay Nelson opened his front door to see his brother-in-law and his two older nephews standing outside. All three of them looked exhausted.
“Hi, guys,” he said. “Come on in.”
Kevin and Toby each gave their uncle a hug, which was warmly returned. Robert took the opportunity to ask, “Where is he?” when it was his turn.
“He’s in the living room; he fell asleep watching CSI. He’s OK. I didn’t need to call the doctor about anything, and Michael said he’d tell me if he was feeling sick or anything.” Jay cleared his throat. “Is that family you told me about going to be all right?”
Robert nodded. “Yeah. Yeah, I think they will.” He put a hand on his brother-in-law’s shoulder. “Thank you, Jay. Thank you for keeping an eye on Michael, for taking him to hospital…” He broke off and looked down at the floor, swallowing hard.
Jay smiled in response. “I’d do it again, Robert. You know that. I’ll get everyone some coffee and something to eat.” He headed towards his kitchen.
The Mendozas went into the living room. Michael was curled up on the couch, his eyes closed and his mouth partially open. He was wearing a blue T-shirt; the lower half of his body was covered by a faded blanket. He looked so peaceful that Robert was tempted to let him sleep for a little longer, then drape him over his shoulder and carry him out to the SUV.
He looks so like his mother.
Robert placed a hand on his sleeping son’s shoulder and shook it gently. “Michael,” he called softly. “Michael, wake up.”
Michael opened his eyes; his colours flared into a startled pale orange. When he saw his family, he relaxed and smiled, his colours turning a beautiful shade of green. He stood up, the blanket falling to the floor; Robert wrapped his youngest son in his arms and held him tightly.
“Ready to come home?” he asked. He felt Michael nod against his shoulder.
“Well, we’re not!” Robert didn’t need to see Kevin to tell he was grinning. “Uncle Jay’s got coffee and food. I don’t know about you, but I’m starving!”
The Mendoza patriarch laughed deeply, releasing Michael from the bear hug. “Come on,” he said, playfully nudging his sons ahead of him. “Let’s go eat.”
