Summary: A few months after the events of The Wedding Crashers, Jacob Cullen-Black is reminded about his responsibilities.
Jacob Cullen-Black wasn’t very thrilled to be back at La Push, especially after the fiasco that the bitch Leah Clearwater and her friends caused at his wedding. Not that it bothered him, the one good thing that came out of it was that Leah was out of his pack for good and he didn’t have to deal with her grumbling anymore. Of course, as if filling the void she left, Embry’s clucking over the pack’s behavior on the rez rattled in Jacob’s head, but he had no time to worry about that. No, his mind was squarely on Renesmee and their honeymoon. The Cullens had some beachfront property in Nice that they graciously opened up to the newlyweds and the further away he was from La Push and pack business, the better.
Embry and Quil met him at the red-roofed administration building and walked in, flanking their Alpha. They went down a hall, past some offices, and entered the large conference room. Jacob recognized his father, Sam Uley, and a very pregnant Sue Swan among the five members seated at the table.
“If you three would have a seat,” Billy instructed. The three young men obliged as the council’s gray haired secretary rapidly typed upon the keys of a black laptop.
“The events of only a few months ago have forced the council and the tribe to meditate our current situation as well as the future of our people,” Billy stated. He took a quick glance at the three shapeshifters sitting before him. Jacob was slouching in his chair, while Embry was hunched over, eyes on the council, and Quil was propping his head up with his hand.
“We have taken pride in our independence,” Billy continued, “but shutting ourselves off from the rest of the world is causing us to lose something precious- our humanity.”
Jacob groaned, prompting a disapproving look from Sam.
“The deaths of those forty-seven innocents is something we cannot ignore. I let my pride get ahead of the safety of our reservation as well as that of our fellow human beings. So as my last act as Council President, I propose that we all lend our aid to their families, be it finding the bodies or providing funds for counseling, funeral arrangements, or any expenses related to their losses.”
“Is that all?” Jacob asked.
“Jacob,” Billy sighed, “I know that you have plans with Renesmee, but this is important. All I ask is that you take your pack and find the bodies that the local authorities may have missed.”
“Why? We didn’t kill those people.”
“No, but we allowed their murderers to roam freely. They didn’t kill on our land, but we shouldn’t have turned a blind eye.”
“What, did you want me to starve our guests? It wouldn’t look too good for us to not uphold our end of the treaty.”
Almost immediately, the council began grumbling and exchanging shocked looks amongst themselves.
“May we remind you that on the November 5 meeting of last year,” the gray-haired secretary piped in, “you threatened to leave the rez along with your pack and their imprints if we didn’t agree to the terms of the treaty you proposed?”
“Renesmee wanted the whole family to be together and, as Alpha, shouldn’t I be making decisions that would benefit the whole rez?” Jake replied. “Isn’t that right, Dad?”
“Indeed, the Cullens have donated a great amount of money to the rez,” Billy answered, “no doubt, for all of us to live comfortably. However, as I have pointed out, that money and energy would be of better use to aid those who have lost loved ones to the Cullen’s guests. The least we can do is offer them closure.”
“So you just want extra wolves to do some heavy lifting? Fine, I’ll hand over the reins to Sam for a bit. Hell, I’ll see if the in-laws would float a loan your way.”
“It would be more effective if you stayed,” Embry suggested. “
“I’ve told you already,” Jacob snapped. “I’ve got plans and I’m so sorry if they don’t involve me digging up graves!”
“It is your responsibility as an Alpha” Sam pointed out, “and as a member of our tribe and as a human being! You are a Quileute!”
“Well, I don’t want to be anymore!”
A silence had fallen on the conference room.
“Why would any sane person want to be? We’re stuck in a crappy little piece of land,” Jacob continued, “hanging on to old superstitions that are only mildly entertaining to the tourists!”
“Jake,” Embry said urgently, “Stop it! Just stop now!”
“Shut up, Embry!” Jacob barked. “I’m a Cullen now and that has more worth than what I ever had as Jacob Black! I am a Cullen!”
The entire council was dumbstruck. There wasn’t even the tapping of keys. Sue had her hands to her mouth, Sam sat there with his mouth gaping, and Billy merely lowered his head.
“Come on, Embry,” Jacob ordered. “You too, Quil. Let’s go find Seth and the others. We’re leaving La Push for good.”
“No, man,” Embry frowned at him.
“Do as I say,” Jacob snarled, glaring at Embry. “Do it.”
“You can’t force me, Jake,” he replied. “I’m sorry.”
Jacob glanced over to Quil who shrugged. The young man frantically looked around the room. He then clenched his fists and grunted before he began to panic.
“You just gave away your birth right,” Sam explained. “You happy now?”
“No-no, no!” Jacob stammered. “What did you do? WHAT DID YOU DO?”
“Just told you,” Sam said. “You gave away your birthright. That clear or would you like Ms. Littlesea to read it back to you?”
Jacob looked at Billy. The elder Black stared at his son, sorrowfully.
“Go back to Renesmee,” he said. “You are no longer needed here.”
Jacob backed away from the council table and as soon as he reached the door, he darted out. Embry watched his former Alpha run through the hallway. He cringed as Jacob suddenly got down on all fours and awkwardly trotted out the front door.
“Embry?” Billy called.
Embry turned his attention back to the Council.
“Your pack has no Alpha,” Billy said. “What are you going to do?”
“I’ll lead them,” Embry answered. “I’ve been doing pretty much that for a while. Might as well make it official.”
