Title: Friends on the Other Side
Author:
afterandalasia
Fandom(s): Twilight, Princess and the Frog
Rating: PG
Word Count: 915
Inspirations: In all honesty, a dream. On more serious levels, the sneakiness of Dr. Facilier in Princess and the Frog.
Summary: In New Orleans, Bella meets a man who promises to read her future. She neglects to ask after the fine print...
I hadn’t been sure, at first, that I wanted to come to New Orleans without Edward. Although he was studying music as well, he couldn’t come to Louisiana, especially on such short notice. I probably wouldn’t have gone at all had we not argued, again, about whether or not he should turn me before I turn nineteen.
“I’m just worried about you making hasty decisions, Bella,” he crooned, stroking my temple gently.
I pushed his hand away. “You think I can’t make decisions? Is that it? Watch me make decisions.”
Which is how I ended up in New Orleans.
It was noisy, bustling, hot, and people kept throwing things. After Mike dropped a fourth string of beads around my neck and Angela tried to present me with a plush seashell, I gave up and slipped away from the others, planning to get some pictures and head back to the hotel, maybe drop Edward an email to reassure him of just how much I was enjoying myself.
Sadly, my feet got the better of me, and part-way down one street a slippery patch sent me slamming butt-first into the sidewalk. “Darn it,” I muttered, going to get to my feet again, only for a hand to wrap around mine and pull me upright.
I snatched my hand away as I stepped back. “Thanks,” I said, warily, eyeing the figure up and down. He was very tall, thin, dark-skinned with a wide smile, and seemed to be dressed up like a lot of the other people that I’d seen here. Frankly, a purple suit, hat and cane were tame compared to a lot of what was on the streets today. In just a couple of hours, I’d seen enough nipples to last me a lifetime.
“Don’t mention it,” he replied. He had a surprisingly nice voice, smooth and rich, and very white teeth. “Dr. Facilier, at your service.”
He bowed from the waist, with a flourish of his hat, and I backed away another step. I could feel my face twisting in uncertainty; although there were plenty of other people in the street, none of them were looking at us. Then again, he sounded less drunk than any of the other people whom my clumsy feet had made me stumble into this evening.
“Bella,” I replied. He straightened up, spun his hat as he returned it to his head, and extended his hand towards me. “And thanks, again, but I really should...”
I raised one hand to wave him away, only for him to catch and shake it. His hand was cool and dry, and I was surprised at how not-gross it felt compared to the sweaty human palms I’d felt this evening. Looking up, I caught his eyes; they were very dark, but strangely fascinating. Almost... dazzling.
He flipped over my hand in his grasp, using both of his hands to spread my fingers out. I tucked some stray hair behind my ear as he tilted my arm slightly to catch the light on it.
“My, my, what a future here! You moved from the sun to the rain, and found the most magical-” he drew out the word as he looked up and caught my gaze “-man to sweep you off your feet. Tell me, Bella, would you like your fortune told?”
I almost went to pull my hand away, but he held me caught in his gaze and I had to force myself to take a breath. I’d come to New Orleans to experience things, after all. “Yes,” I said, voice verging on the greedy. “Yes, tell me what’s going to happen.”
Everything that he said was true. One card for my past: Arizona, heat, isolation. One for my present: vampires, werewolves, danger pressing all around me and troubling me in the world I still felt like I belonged to. Then one for my future, and he just looked at it for the longest time without saying anything, whilst I felt my heart thundering in my chest and eventually, slowly, leant forwards as well in search of what he might be seeing.
“Well, well, Miss Swan,” he purred. “You want to be like your young man Edward... cold and hard and unchanging...”
“Yes,” I said breathlessly. “Yes, that’s what I want.”
He looked up from the card, eyes shining, and gave me that broad gap-toothed grin. “Well then, Bella, shake my hand... and let’s see what we can do.”
I grabbed his hand before I could restrain myself, shook it hard.
Then the world exploded.
Purple and green lights flashed in my vision as Dr. Facilier laughed, his face flickering like a skull as he watched me. A scream rose in my throat, and I leapt to my feet, intending to turn and run. But my feet were rooted to the ground; I looked down in horror, only to see cold white creeping up my calves, towards my knees, turning my skin into bright curves. My breath came faster and faster as I looked up again.
“What have you done?” I screamed.
Facilier spun on the spot, removed his hat, and bowed to me once more. “I gave you what you wanted, my dear. What you asked for. If you aren’t happy...”
He withdrew a compact from his pocket, flicked it open, and puffed hard over its surface. Sparkling silver dust filled my vision; as it went black, a few final words reached through to me.
“Just blame my friends on the other side.”
