Summary: If the Volturi were indeed something to be feared, this is what would’ve transpired in the alley when Edward was insisting he hadn’t actually broken any rules.
“You haven’t broken any rules?” the second figure said, his voice wryly amused. “I would dearly love to hear your reasoning behind that statement.”
“No one saw me,” Edward said, belligerent and aggressive. “I didn’t step out into the sunlight. No rules have been broken.”
One of the shadows moved, and was clearly pointing at me. “Then do you care to explain that, Mr. Cullen?”
Edward tensed, his body rigid. “No,” he growled. “I do not. That is none of your concern.”
“On the contrary, Mr. Cullen,” the smaller shadow said, his voice smooth and businesslike now. “That is very much our concern. That is a human. Said human clearly knows about this…little situation. If I am not mistaken, that is a broken rule, is it not?” The voice was suddenly amused again. “Or do you somehow know of a change in our laws before we were made aware?”
“She is not part of this—” Edward snarled, but the larger figure spoke now.
“Mr. Cullen,” he said, his voice low and rumbling. “You seem to be under the mistaken impression that you have the advantage in this situation. Allow me to correct this flaw in your perceptions—you do not have the advantage. We are not the only two here, and we know you are aware of this. You don’t seem to understand how serious the situation is. You just blatantly lied to us, saying you broke no laws even as you stand there with a human who clearly knows exactly what we are and what we are doing here. That leaves us to wonder just how many other loose ends you and your rabble have scattered across the world, and I can assure you, there will be an investigation into just what your little enclave has been up to for the past century. But for now, we are going to take care of this immediate problem.”
The shadows moved closer. “So let me say this only once, Mr. Cullen: Come inside with us. Now.”
