Title: Witching Hour
Author: Seiler88
Beta:
Rating: G
Word Count: 1,911
Inspiration: New Moon’s lack of plot and the need to explain some of the background for my character.
Summary: Summer has come and gone while Durin has watched the Cullens. As he gets to know more about Forks it seems that it is a more interesting place than one would think.
Author’s Note: This chapter is about wizards and explaining a bit about how magic works in my universe. Next chapter will explain my version of how “shifters” work and more magic rules.

Intro Music: Dimond Eyes by Shine Down.

Three months had past since Durin’s fight with the vampire. Since Durin had confirmed that a coven of vampires was based in Forks he had been ordered to observe them and make sure that they behaved themselves. After about a week all there was to report was that the Cullens were the most boring bunch of immortals that Durin had ever seen.

That meant that he spent most of his time bored out of his skull. Durin flipped through the television channels for the fourth time as he spotted a red Ferrari pass his window for the sixth time today. After a few more minutes of thinking he decided to take a walk.

Over the summer Durin himself had ceased to be an oddity around town and had been filed away as one of the “eccentrics” that lived in the area. That particular development suited him just fine.

Durin had also become a regular at the small cafe that he had stopped on the day he had arrived. He had gotten to know some of the waitstaff there as well.

One of the waitresses seemed to have taken an interest in him. Her name was Sarah Yorkie.

“Hi, Durin, your usual?”

“Yes please, Sarah, thank you.”

After looking out the window and the clock she left to get his order. She came back with his sandwich a few minutes later.

“The coffee was a bit stale for your tastes so I had them put on a new pot. Is that alright?”

“That’s fine thank you.”

When she came back she had his coffee but she had taken off her hat and apron.

“Look, I need to talk to you.”

“About?”

“The weird shit that’s been happening since you came around.” She said while lowering her voice. “Every time you’ve come here in the last few months you’ve been followed by one of those Cullens. I see at least one of their cars circle around the block constantly. Along with the little technicolor display you carry around means that whenever you’re here I have to deal with rolling migraines.”

Some of what Sarah said intrigued Durin, “So is it my ‘display’ or the Cullens that give you headaches?”

“I’ve always had headaches when I’m too close to the Cullens, you just make it worse.”

“I see.” Durin traced a few sensing runes under the table. Just as he finished the spell Sarah flinched and blinked and the man sitting across the room behind her also twitched. Sure enough the spell reveled that the girl’s eyes glowed with a faint light.

“What did you just do?”

“What does it look like I did?”

“It looked like a light flicked on in the middle of your forehead.”

“I see, well what would you say if I told you that magic was real and you also live in a world where vampires, demons, and dragons also exist?”

“I’d say that you need to lay off the manga and hash brownies, also stop being a dick.”

Durin chuckled a bit at that and used a little telekinesis to stir his coffee. “You can see what I’m doing, yes? Looks like there are spider webs coming out on my hand, am I right?” Sarah’s eyes widened as the realization set in.

“This isn’t the time or the place for me to explain more. I can meet you someplace like the library whenever you have time.”

“I’ve got a day off in three days so I can meet you after lunch.”

“Sounds good, see you then.”

The evening was uneventful for Durin since the Cullens were occupied with something involving the Swan girl.

He woke up the next morning to find that his not-subtle-at-all surveillance was gone. Durin spent the day running errands around town and overheard the latest news. It seemed that Bella had returned from what had turned out to be her birthday party with a fairly serious injury on her arm.

Bella had managed to keep herself in the town gossip, although the nature of said gossip had gone though several changes. At first it was because she was new, like Durin was, then it was because she had managed to bag the “big fish” in town. However, as of late it was mostly talk of her injuries, speculation on how much of a scum bag Cullen was and, most importantly, how much pain it was putting her father though.

All though the day he saw no sign of any of the Cullens. It was the same the next morning as well.

Since he had taken the day before off he spent the entire day scouring the woods for any sign of vampiric activity.

When it was getting close to evening he came across Bella by herself, on her knees and crying her eyes out. She was so worked up that she didn’t even notice Durin walk up. “What are you doing out here Swan?”

She jumped when he spoke and then an unsettling look of desperation crossed her face.” Have you seen Edward? I need to find him!”

“No. Why do you ask?”

“He left me!” She shrieked.

“Trying to scare you again is he? Well, looks like he pulled it off this time so I bet he’ll be back after he changes his pants.”

“No, he said that he didn’t love me any more and that his family was leaving to. After that he left me here alone and I can’t find him.” When she finished she looked at him as if she expected something. When Durin did nothing but look a bit amused she tried to put on some sort of martyred look but the fact was Durin could tell that she was just angry.

“What? Where you expecting me to show sympathy for someone stupid enough to seek love from the undead? Hate to break it to you Swan but vampires can’t love. That is something only the living can do.” He took a moment to scan her mind. It was easier to do this time because he knew she was a Screener and she had done nothing with her ability since he had first met her. He also saw that she had a slightly bigger problem of being lost.

“But he said he loved me!”

“He lied. Now look, I know you’re lost so follow me and I’ll get you back to town.”

“You don’t like me so why are you helping? You should just leave me here to die!”

“First, I’m wrapping up for today and was about to head back anyway. Second, it’s my job to save lives regardless of my personal feelings! Now get up and let’s go.”

Swan stood up and started to walk behind him. After they had gone a few yards she started to stumble and trip. Durin knew that she wasn’t very athletic or much of an outdoors person so he had picked clear paths for them to follow. Durin did another mind scan to see that it was an act for attention. “Stop the act Swan. I know your legs work just fine so I’m not going to carry you around.”

He heard her sputtering in outrage. It seemed she was shocked that her act had been revealed and that someone had dared to not play her game. “You are one of the most selfish creatures I have ever met and I’ve faced down demon lords.” With a little more concentration he delved deeper in to her mind. “Hell, you don’t love that vampire! You love his stuff. You think the immortality is fun too? Well, let me tell you from nine hundred years of living, it’s not all it’s cracked up to be!”

“Wait! You said you were how old?”

“Nine hundred and five to be exact.”

“How? You’re human and your face is all scared!”

“I’m what’s called a Guardian. Every one of use has unique God granted ability and weapon. Mine happens to be a long lifespan. As for the scars, being a Guardian means we are a warriors fighting against the forces of Hell directly. You don’t fight Hell for long without getting hurt badly and often.”

“Can you make me one as well?”

Durin laughed at that question. “You didn’t listen did you?” He raised his hand and curled his fingers as if grabbing something. At that moment he used telekinesis to choke Bella. “You stand at a crossroads Swan. One the one hand, you can follow me to your home, got to sleep, wake up and forget about all of this.” He tightened his telekinetic gip causing her to fall to her knees. “The other, you can keep going the way you are now and that will lead to your destruction. At this moment you are unfit to train as a mage, you are too selfish and lazy. The choice is yours.”

The moment he let her go Bella got to her feet and ran back into the woods screaming for Edward. Durin made no effort to follow.

Durin took his time on the walk back to calm down.

When it was time to speak to Sandra the next day he met her at the public library. They managed to find a table toward the back.

“Alright, what the hell is going on?”

“Getting right to the point I see. Very well, Sandra, you have a higher than normal affinity for magic. You can see magical auras around people and things.”

“So what dose that mean? Am I cursed or something?”

“I may as well start with the basics.” Durin said with a sigh. “Magic is energy; simple as that. You should already know the Laws of Thermodynamics, yes?” Sandra nodded. “Good, well magic is what happens to all the ‘wasted’ energy in the world. It becomes an ‘energy soup’ of sorts and that is what people like you and me tap into to create magic.”

“So what you’re saying is that I’m a wizard?”

“Exactly.”

“I was expecting someone taller.”

Durin then pulled out a book and a small pouch. “This is your starter kit. It has everything you need to work the most basic spells.” Sandra opened the pouch and pulled out it’s contents. The pouch contained a small blackboard, three tubes filled with sparkling dust, and a dozen sticks of chalk that also glittered when held up to the light.

“Powdered quartz and quartz impregnated chalk. If you chose to go through with the training you had better get used to this stuff because you are going to use a ton of it over the years. Now one final warning before I finish, if you keep these things then you are agreeing to train as a mage. Training puts you in touch with thousands of other mages around the world but it also may attract the attention of the things we fight.”

“The demons and vampires you mentioned?”

“Yes, and you may be called to actively fight these things. So if you want to back out now you will never hear from us unless you actively seek us but the farther you go the harder it is to back out. So consider carefully before you start using these things. If you have questions find me and I’ll help you or get you in touch with someone who can help you.”

With that Durin stood up and left the library.

This is interesting. I like the idea of the Cullens giving good magic users headaches.

You really need a beta reader for your work. The one woman's name changed from Sarah Yorkie to Sandra in the middle of the fic. Stuff like that is extremely jarring, and throws the reader out of an otherwise promising story.
