Fandom(s): The Twilight 'Saga', Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha (Both Soulless Army and King Abbandon)
Rating: PG
Word Count: 8,769 + Notes
Inspiration: The uncanny resemblance between the powers of the Cullens and the Investigative Powers of Skill and Pagan demons in the Raidou Kuzunoha games
Warnings: Violence, a couple of curses, a rampant OC, time travel and a mad scientist, sodding long
Summary: A pair of Devil Summoners come to Forks. Their mission: destroy the Cullens and save Bella.
Disclaimers: I don't own Twilight, I own copies of Raidou but it ain't my intellectual property (otherwise Narumi/Raidou would be canon), Carmel is the only thing I own here and I'll fight to the death to keep her.
Charlie not only joined them on the attack on Saturday night, he organised extra weapons and didn’t even blink when Carmel, Raidou and Rasputin disappeared into the supermarket and came back with blades enhanced by Victor’s alchemy.
The slightly glowing ammo made him blink, but he got a rather worrying smirk when Raidou explained to him exactly how it worked.
Carmel called Lauren half an hour before the raid. “Is she out of the way?” she asked after some brief pleasantries, not even trying to keep the worry out of her voice.
“Angela had to practically pin her down, but we’re watching movies. I managed to convince her that people would hate her precious Edward if she kept spending all her time with him.” They both snickered at that – most everyone at the school was visibly afraid of or angry at the Cullens already.
“You’re a good friend, Lauren, even if she doesn’t deserve it.” She hung up the phone and nodded at Charlie. “She’s safe for now.”
“Let’s go.” Charlie hefted his shotgun and drove most of the way up the long, winding drive to the Cullen residence, pausing briefly to let everyone but Rasputin out of the car. Raidou headed for the back, while Narumi stayed near Carmel as she went for the side. She was not well-practiced with guns, but her erratic aim would lay down cover fire to let the detective use his far more polished skills.
There were to be no demons out, but Charlie had given them all the little mobile headsets that he’d scrimped and saved for to help the department, and even though they’d had to explain how to work them to their visitors, it was about to be useful. She wanted to hear this.
Animals didn’t get near the Cullen house. They could sense demons. As a result, the forest was almost disgustingly silent. She didn’t doubt that they knew there were people out here, but Charlie would take care of that.
The sound of Charlie Swan in full Police Chief mode hammering on the Cullen’s front door echoed down the line, making Narumi twitch and flinch. “Carlisle Cullen!”
The door creaked and a smooth, almost lilting masculine voice came down the line, far softer than Charlie but still audible. “Charlie. To what do I owe the pleasure?” She understood then why the sound of his fist on the door had been so loud; he’d tweaked the sensitivity to make it easier for them all to hear.
“I hate to bother you at dinner time, but this is police business.” She could sense Edward’s mental power leaping out to try delve into Charlie’s mind and then Raidou’s and Narumi’s. She’d asked her Alp to shield Narumi, though, and Raidou’s Lilith was shielding Charlie and she believed he’d asked it to transmit annoying children’s rhymes into Edward’s head to distract him.
“I do hope Emmett hadn’t been speeding again. We do try, but you know what teenage boys are like,” Carlisle said soothingly, and she tightened her hold on the pistol sitting heavy in her hand.
“I have a daughter, Doctor Cullen.” Charlie was magnificent, sounding so cool and calm when not ten minutes before he’d been reciting his plans to shoot Edward’s genitalia off. “Listen, we’ve had a threat made against your family. We’re trying to track down the culprit, but he made it clear that he knows were you live.”
“I see.” Carlisle sounded strangely subdued, completely unworried and, if anything, slightly bored. “What do you plan to do, police chief?”
“Some of my boys are coming up with a van to transport you all to a safe house. A couple of specialists are going to sweep the house as soon as you’re all outside in case he wasn’t kidding about the firebomb. If you could gather your family?”
“Of course.” There was scuffling and shouting from inside the house, and she smirked. Oh yes, the firebomb was the perfect threat to use. The chance of going up in flames was too much. The house would burn, oh yes, but not from any old bomb.
The Cullens emerged from the house as a group, and that was their cue to move. Raidou shouted an instruction, and the building went up in a pillar of fire as his Sati’s Agidyne hit. She started shooting madly, only using normal ammo and aiming at the house itself, while Narumi settled beside her and squeezed off a couple of shots, knocking the motherly one – Esme – off her feet.
Edward swore and looked around in confusion, so used to relying on his mind-reading power that he was completely thrown off guard. She whispered “Edward next,” to Narumi, who nodded and sent a trio of bullets directly into his chest. The demon was thrown back, and she took advantage of the moment to call her newly-fused Pyro Jack forth, echoing it’s cackle with a slightly hysterical laugh of her own.
Adrenaline was pumping through her veins now, and she dropped her pistol and ammo belt by the almost unnaturally calm detective to draw her sword instead, smirking at the faint aura of flames that surrounded it. She moved forward quickly and quietly, taking advantage of the strange lights cast by the burning building to avoid detection.
It didn’t hurt that Charlie had pulled his gun out and was holding the recovering Edward at bay with an expression of sheer, unmitigated hatred. Rasputin’s sword was out and he was sparring with Emmett, shouting Russian insults at the boy.
Narumi’s aim was magnificent – each shot connected in a way designed to knock over or disable. He didn’t even come close to grazing her as she closed the pincer, nodding at Raidou the instant she saw him before charging in. Jasper met her sword with his arm, only for his flesh to smoulder and char. She felt him trying to reach in and summon fear. She ignored him. All summoners knew fear, and all knew how to keep it at bay regardless of the duress.
Instead she kept advancing, gesturing for Jack to summon up more flames to cut the Cullens off from any retreat. She was not yet advanced enough to fight with two demons, not like Raidou, and a disconnected part of her mind was jealous of the way he flowed through battle, Sati on one side and a Pixie on the other, holding off Alice and Carlisle at the same time. She had her hands full with the snarling Jasper, who became increasingly demonic with each blow he was forced to parry and suffer.
Finally she managed to hack off an arm, and with that done he fell apart stroke by stroke. Alice screamed and turned from Raidou, who promptly turned all his attention on Carlisle. Rasputin had worn Emmett down almost to nothing, an Oni under his command quite literally holding the screaming Rosalie at bay. Edward was still paralysed by Charlie’s deliberate shots, and Esme wasn’t going to be staying upright for any amount of time while Narumi still had bullets.
Alice pounced so quickly that she barely had time to bring her sword up to block the quite enthusiastic attempt to rip her throat out, and they tumbled to the ground. Fire pulsed somewhere behind her as the seemingly fragile girl pinned her down and tore the sword from her hands, tossing it to the side where it landed against the burning building amongst sparks and slowly-falling ashes.
“Why couldn’t I see you, you strange little thing?” she crooned, her hand around her throat making Carmel shudder. “I had to smell you out... and oh, Edward is right, when someone smells as wonderful as you, it’s torture not to eat them right there... But now I’ll take you and make you my friend, won’t that be lovely? And you’ll be able to wear such pretty clothes, not like these horrible things you’re wearing now. You’d look so nice in blue...”
Her giggle was a sickening wrong thing caught in her throat. “Jasper will have to punish you, of course, but once you’ve learned your lesson you’ll be my best friend... Aren’t you a lucky little thing?”
“DAD!” she screamed into the fire and the chaos, trying her best to push Alice off and failing against her nightmarish strength, and two things happened almost at once. A trio of bullets, neat as you could ever want, slammed into her temple and yanked her sidewards, and Rasputin’s sword came down in a magnificent arch and sliced clean through her neck.
She lurched to her feet and looked around, managing a dark smile at the sight of most of the Cullens damaged beyond their capacity for regeneration. Well, maybe not completely beyond, but they wouldn’t be getting up before the end of the battle. Edward was held at bay once more, Raidou’s sword at his throat and Charlie’s gun at his temple. Carlisle had been sliced up as neatly as he could have wished, much more neatly than the mess she’d made of Jasper. Rosalie had been literally ripped in two by the Oni, dust and purplish muck falling from where her insides should have been. Emmett had finally succumbed to Rasputin’s blade through one eye and then the other.
She stooped to recover her blade, and saw Esme’s reflection in the flickering light. She turned to deal with her, only for a few more shots to send her right back to the ground. “Narumi! You can come out now!”
The detective joined them, his white suit annoyingly pristine and gun trained firmly on the groaning Esme. “I’d hate to waste any more ammunition on her,” he said, a small smile quirking his lips despite the coldness of his voice. “If you’d care to do the honours.”
Her sword came down hard, decapitating her the same way the boss had decapitated Alice. “Let’s go watch them smite Edward.”
Charlie’s hand was shaking as he glared down at Edward, nothing but venom in his eyes. “She’s my daughter, you sick fuck,” he managed to choke out. “Ras... Do it.”
Rasputin raised his sword, looked Edward dead in the eye, and slashed hard. Edward’s head seemed to simply disintegrate into dust and muck.
“Now we burn,” Raidou said simply, and without any further words they hauled the bodies into a pile. As one, Sati, Pyro Jack and Oni cast fire spells on them, and the scent of burning demon filled the night.
There didn’t seem to be anything left to say. One by one they returned to the car to wait. All except Charlie, who stayed until every last fragment of Edward had turned into ashes.
They returned to Forks in silence.
