Title: Powerless
Author: twistedinsight
Fandom(s): The Twilight Series, mostly New Moon
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 1540
Inspiration: I don't think Bella has an angsty past. The editor who suggested that Reneè be handicapped had a good idea, except Billy's already handicapped. Also, Jacob was suppose to be a childhood friend and not just a romantic rival or rebound guy. Another thing that bothered me was that Jacob lost his mother years ago and she's never mentioned. She's mentioned less than Reneè!
Warnings: F-Bomb, character death, and disease.
Summary: This is kind of a flashback sort of thing. Reneè is sick and needs to stay with Charlie until she feels strong enough to take care of herself. Jacob's mother dies. I honestly liked Jacob before, so don't remind me of Eclipse.
Note: This is my first one :D
She knew he couldn't do anything for her mother, though. She also knew what it was like to see a loved one in pain and want to fix it. They were all powerless.

Swan Residence
"Thanks so much for taking me in. You know, after everything," Reneé said awkwardly, which was uncharacteristic of her.
"You know I'd do anything for you and Isabella," Charlie assured his ex-wife, who looked pale and frightened.
"It's just Bella," she corrected him. He already knew that his daughter preferred to be called Bella, but he still loved the name.
"Oh, well, that, too," Charlie smiled. He still loved Reneè, so it was hard to see her again. What hurt even more was that now she was ill. It was hard to believe that she could get Parkinson's Disease - so hard to believe, that Charlie insisted that it was something else. Something less serious.
"It will be good for Bella to see that we still get along well," Reneè said optimistically. She missed Charlie. He was so dependable and predictable.
(so dependable and predictable)
It still stung that she had to leave her friends and family back in Phoenix.
July, 1999
La Push, Washington
"I want to be the cop!" Bella shouted to her friend, Jacob. By then, they were both covered in mud from digging holes, hoping to make it to China.
"Just because your DAD's a cop," Jacob muttered. "I'd be a better cop. I'm stronger."
"Are not! I'm the cop. I'm older!" Bella's round face flushed in excitement as she bickered with her friend. The cops and robbers game wasn't going according to plan.
"Not all cops have to be strong. I mean, my dad could beat up your dad," Jacob bragged. "And I'd be a better robber than you. You're a goody-goody."
"Yeah, well my mom could beat up yours! And I do plenty of bad things. Just last week, I had a cookie before dinner." Bella knew that she was a goody-goody, and that her mother couldn't take on Sarah Black and emerge victorious. Bella's mother was pale, weak, and always shaking. She wouldn't stop shaking.
(STOPITSTOPITSTOPITMAKEITSTOPSHAKING!)
She was no match for Sarah, who was 5'9" and solidly built, even muscular. Despite Sarah's strength, she had kind, soft brown eyes. Her face was heart-shaped, she had almond eyes, and her raven-black hair was shoulder-length with side-bangs. She was even kinder than she looked.
"No, your mom could beat mine up," Jacob said quietly, no longer in the mood to bicker. He heard his parents talking, and the word "Parkinson's" came up a lot. He didn't know what it meant, but his parents were very fun-loving people, so it bothered him to see them talk in low voices.
"Don't lie to me," Bella said, offended. She smiled sadly to herself, looking down at the holes they had dug up. Her round face, made rounder by the fact that she was going through a pudgy phase, was filled with sadness. The worst part was that she couldn't make it better. All her fairytales had told her that love could conquer all, especially with the famous True Love's Kiss clichè. There was no possibility that Bella just didn't love her mother enough to heal her, so she was disillusioned.
"Sorry, Bells. You know I'm here for you. Always. I may only be nine, but I can try to make it better," Jacob promised.
"Thanks, Jake," Bella looked back up at him. It wasn't so hard to look into his face when she saw his friendliness and warmth. He was the perfect friend.

Later that night
The morgue
"What do you THINK happened?" Billy Black demanded, his narrow eyes wide open in anger, shock, and fear. "SHE HAS TWO FUCKING HOLES IN HER NECK AND YOU SAY IT'S CHOLERA!!!!!!!!"
"Somebody needs a coffee" the medical examiner said bitterly.
"Hey, don't talk to him like that" Chief Swan snarled. He was beside himself that anyone could be so insensitive to a man who just found out his wife had died. "Just because the body's been drained, doesn't mean it's cholera. Someone would have noticed."
"Yes, but vampires?" The examiner readjusted his glasses, hoping to find some sort of proof that the woman died of cholera. "It's likely she didn't get her shots."
"Oh, yeah, we're all in teepees, wearing headdresses, and only see a shaman, is tha-"
"Billy." Charlie said quietly, but with severity that could even scare his best friend. "I think you should go, Mr... never mind, I'll forget it in two minutes. Go." Charlie did know the man's name, though. Forks was a very small town, and being the chief of police gave him the opportunity to meet many different people. Charlie was going to have to report Mr. Wright.
Once the man left, Billy started to cry. This was when he finally processed that his wife was dead. He didn't know what to tell Jacob, Rachel, and Rebecca. He decided that whatever he did, he was going to raise them as well as he would if Sarah were still there. As Billy grieved quietly, Charlie put a hand on his friend's shoulder.
September 2005
The woods
Bella and Jacob were teenagers. Bella's parent became best friends, and Charlie still had feelings for Reneè. Reneè was still sick. She was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. It kept getting worse at a steady pace, but had recently improved. Jacob's sisters went to college, which left him to help his father when his Diabetes kicked in, and he lost use of his legs.
When it first happened, Jacob's first reaction would be to reach out to help Billy, but he refrained because the therapists told him not to. They said he needs to learn to function on his own. They were right, because eventually, Billy managed to relearn how to do everything he used to do. Well, Billy couldn't walk or drive.
Luckily, he managed to save enough money to sell his old truck and get one he could drive with just his hands. "Better not get arthritis" Billy said dryly, smiling sarcastically to himself. To which Charlie would snap at him, not to even joke about that. He was a perfectly laid-back, funny friend when they were fishing or watching ESPN, but he could also be stern when he felt any of his friends were being ridiculous. He knew someone had to play the devil's advocate, or in this case, that someone had to give Billy some 'tough love'.
Jacob's friend, Sam Uley, who seemed to be some sort of a gang leader, found Bella lying on the ground one day. She was shrieking like a stuck pig, hyperventilating, and shaking.
(STOPITSTOPITSTOPITMAKEITSTOPSHAKING!)
Jacob was there, so Bella turned to face him. "Jacob, the hole. It hurts. I'm empty," she gasped.
"What are you talking about?" he asked, a quizzical expression on his face. He decided not to ask any further questions because she was probably unaware of what she was saying.
"Life. Has. No meaning," she choked out pitifully.
(I'm empty)
The next day
Swan Residence
Jacob had noticed a huge difference in Bella for the past few months. He didn't know what it was, but it bothered him. Once he saw her that morning as she walked downstairs in her flannel pyjamas, Jacob knew. She wasn't really Bella. This was just an empty shell of his best childhood friend. Her face was more pale and pointed than he liked. She was much prettier with a rounder face and rosy cheeks.
"What happened, Bells? Is your mother okay?" Jacob whispered once the room was clear.
"Who? Oh, yeah," Bella said in her creepy monotone. "Jake. Edward left me."
"What? That's it?" Jacob said, relieved.
"What do you mean? My life is over!" Bella shrieked.
"Bells, I think you can manage. He's not your Mr. Darcy. You deserve better."
"There IS no better! I can't go on. And he's better than Mr. Darcy. Mr. Darcy was a rich snob."
Jacob snorted, "Bells, hon, really?"
At that point, Charlie pulled Jacob aside. "She's extremely sensitive right now. She'll snap out of it, but heartbreak is hard for anyone"
"I know. I'm sorry, Chief" Jacob mumbled, looking at his shoes.
"You just want her to be okay again, I know. Your mother was the same. She always wanted to solve every problem. Of course, your father did everything in his power, too." Charlie saw so much of Sarah and Billy in their young boy.
"Look, I got to go. Could Bella come over when she's less… you know," Jacob said, gazing longingly at the front door.
"Less of a bummer?" Charlie raised an eyebrow knowingly. "Yes, I'll drive her over."
Later that day
La Push, Washington
"I thought about it, and you're right," Bella said, facing the Pacific Ocean as the wind swept wisps of her hair that had fallen out of her loose ponytail. "I shouldn't have made such a big deal of the break-up. I guess I just… I have so much to deal with every day, that I needed something small to vent about."
"I know. My mom died. I have to watch my father get ridiculed when he's out in public because he's in a wheelchair. I just wish we could go back to before. Back when we could do anything, be anything. When we were just kids," Jacob sighed, following Bella's gaze at the ocean.
"How do you manage?" Bella whispered.
"I just worry about it day-to-day. You're looking at the big picture," Jacob advised.
"How did you get so smart?" Bella smiled. He friend didn't have her grades, but he knew just what to say. He was wise.
(so dependable, predictable)
"Well, if I were really smart, I would have done this a long time ago," Jacob said as he leaned over and pecked Bella on the cheek. Bella grabbed him and kissed him back, but on the lips.

Date: 2011-05-15 04:43 pm (UTC)1) For the LJ-cut to work, you need to have the [/lj-cut] after the last sentence of the story. At the moment, all you're cutting is one sentence.
2) Your HTML is in the wrong place. This is your HTML: [lj-cut text="She also knew what it was like to see a loved one in pain and want to fix it. They were all powerless."]. Put that AFTER the header, in front of May 1999.
3) Delete the sentence above the header. You don't need the same line twice.
It should be okay after you do all this.
**Note: I'm using brackets instead of < and > so that you'll be able to see what the coding looks like.
