Author's Note:
das_mervin's fic "Requiem for Charlie Swan" was really heartwrenching and I decided to write a little ficlet from Renee's point of view about the situation. You might like to go read that fic first, since I make a few allusions to it in mine. The fic title comes from the lullaby Baby Mine, specifically, the version sung by Celtic Woman.
"She didn't take the angel, Renee. She didn't...she didn't take it...oh God our baby's gone...she's gone-"
Renee gripped the phone tightly in her hand, her knuckles turning white. Charlie was sobbing, crying, something she had only seen him do once when she had left and he was begging her not to go, please stay, we can fix this Renee, don't leave me--
And now Bella had left him. His baby girl. Their baby girl.
How could Bella do that?
Probably just as easily as Renee had done it. She really was her mother's daughter.
Renee remained silent, letting Charlie talk until he couldn't anymore and could only sob quietly. It was a few moments before he finally asked, in a quiet, shaky voice, "What did I do wrong, Renee?"
She bit her lip and thought. "You didn't do anything wrong. It wasn't you. It was..." She couldn't bring herself to finish.
Maybe it was me. Maybe it's my fault that our family's been torn apart.

Date: 2011-02-20 05:50 am (UTC)The brevity of the fic somehow strengthens the emotional impact. Nothing more needs to be said because it is all right there.
Beautiful fic--and I am very flattered to have inspired you.

Date: 2012-07-15 01:24 am (UTC)Thank you! I honestly think Renee would probably blame herself a lot. She'd wonder Was I horrible role model for my daughter? Was there something else I should have taught her? Could I have done something? So I tried to convey those emotions.
