Title: Like Any Father Would
Author: amadris
Fandom(s): Twilight (1st book)/Supernatural (hinted)
Rating: R
Word Count: 1320
Inspiration: Inspired by a spitefic das_mervin made back in chapter 8.
Warnings: Some language, violence, character death
Author’s Note: I was skimming through Mervin’s sporkings and came across the spitefic she did in chapter 8, when Edward is being all creepy and Bella goes to the toilet to call Charlie. That got me thinking, and after getting this fabulous idea of Charlie being a secret super hero, aided by the forces of Heaven, I just had to start writing. We’ll see what that will do to my exam tomorrow.
I contemplated whether I should include a quote from Mervin’s spitefic, but figured it would be too long and not really fitting, so I left it out. But if you wonder what I am talking about, here’s the link: http://community.livejournal.com/das_sporking/86424.html#cutid1. This is my first try, so be gentle with me!
The spitefic is a bit long, but I couldn’t really explain everything with fewer words.
Anyway, enjoy!
EDIT: I noticed the spitefic in question is actually on twispitefic . Must have missed it when I checked the list of the posted spitefics. You can find it community.livejournal.com/twispitefic/2508.html

Charlie Swan took a deep, calming breath. Of course he knew every minute was precious now, but he couldn’t afford being rash now. It was Bella’s life in question, and she was more important to him than anything. Still, he could not think like a father would. He needed to think like a soldier. And after a second, the usual quiet calm took over, like it always did. He was a good hunter, because he could shut out emotions and just let himself and things flow.
With few long leaps he was upstairs and in his bedroom. In the back of his closet, behind powerful demon traps, was everything he would need, and more. It wasn’t the usual sawed-off shotgun he would use tonight, though, but the deadliest weapon he owned.
The shimmering angelic blade.
He had received it ten years ago, when he had finished a demon in Port Angeles. Charlie still remembered the non-descript man who had given it to him as a sign of gratitude. The demon he had sent back to Hell would have caused serious trouble in future hadn’t Charlie cut in. Apocalypticly serious trouble, the angel had said.
The gleaming blade was dangerous weapon, not only because it could kill just about everything that lurked in the dark. It was dangerous because if someone realized he had such thing, his house would be swarming with all kinds of nasty things who wanted it for themselves. Charlie had used the blade for about three times. Now he would need it again. He was going to kill a vampire – a kind of bloodsucker that was resistant to all man-made weapons.
But angel-made? The freak in question would be dead in couple of hours.
Hiding the blade inside his sleeve, Charlie shut the secret stock of weapons. Then he hurried back downstairs, taking long steps as if preparing to take flight. He surely hoped he could have done such thing.
Charlie hopped in his car, checked the watch and started driving. He could only hope Bella was still alive and well. If everything went well, she would be able to keep up her calm facade until he got there. But if she cracked and the creature noticed... Charlie didn’t really want to think about that. Bella was the only thing that mattered to Charlie now.
He remembered it all like yesterday. Running away from his family, not wanting to become a hunter like the others. He had wanted something different. Something better. Even then, it was in his blood. He became a cop, to guard and serve people like he had used to. And he got married and had a beautiful baby daughter. Life had seemed perfect.
Until his father had shown up to beg his help with a shtriga in Port Angeles. Things had gone real bad, and the shtriga had attacked Charlie’s wife and daughter. Luckily he had got there in time.
It hadn’t prevented Renee from leaving the next day with their child.
Charlie had become a hunter again, after she had left. Being a cop was useful, of course, for all the data he could ever dream of. It had gotten a bit difficult with Bella around, but Charlie surely did not complain. He liked having his kid around, even though it took a lot of organizing so that she would not find out about his secret job.
And now he was going after the thing that haunted her. He had thought the Cullens had been okay, drinking only animal blood and keeping to themselves, so he had left them alone. But apparently they weren’t so innocent as he had thought. Thank God anything bad hadn’t happened yet.
He had been driving fast, so absorbed by his memories that he didn’t even realize he was already on the outskirts of Port Angeles. His heart was bumping quicker now, too, but Charlie fought to keep up the calm stillness of his mind. God knew how bad he wanted to kill the monster now, but he couldn’t afford that. There was plenty of time for panicking later.
He stopped right in the front of the restaurant Bella had mentioned. Bracing himself, Charlie got out and approached the front door with long stride. He opened the door with unneeded force and sought for his daughter, but she was nowhere to be seen. His composure almost cracked, and he had to prevent himself from grabbing the hostess violently by arm.
“Can I help you?” she asked, confused.
“I am looking for my daughter. Long brown hair, very pale, average height. She is with a boy of her age”, he said, his voice almost betraying him. A knowing look filled her face.
“Oh! I see. They’re right at the back – at one of the booths”, the hostess told him. He just nodded, relieved beyond reason. The cold metal of the angelic blade comforted him as he approached the booths that were hidden behind tall scenes. Perfect.
Bella was always pretty pale, so it was hard to say if it was a sign of her state of mind. There was a sickly feel to her, though, but it seemed to fade when she saw her father coming. He could actually hear a small squeal of relief – which of course alarmed the vampire. That stinky bastard.
“Chief Swan?” the boy asked, confused. “Why are you here?”
“I came because my daughter called me and told that you were bothering her. I’ve been putting up with you and your kind for some time now, but I guess you just could not return the favor and leave my daughter alone”, Charlie started with quiet, angry voice. He stood right in the front of the vampire, so there were nowhere to run.
“I am simply taking care of her. She needs a guardian, otherwise she will –“ the vampire tried, but Charlie just slapped him. It hurt a bit, of course, with his stonehard skin, but getting to slap the freak was fort of some pain.
“Shut up, you creep. She is my daughter. It is my duty to keep her safe, not yours”, he snarled. The monster looked taken aback and a bit annoyed now, but that did not prevent Charlie. “I could arrest you for your activities, but I know that your family would just come right in to save your sorry ass. That, or you would just bust out the jail like any smug bastard would. And then you’d be right back harassing my daughter. That is why I am going to send you to permanent captivity even you can’t escape.”
And then Charlie thrust the angelic blade through the boy’s chest.
The vampire looked amazed, but only for a second, for things were happening to him now: a blinding light was beginning to burn through his eyes, his gaping mouth, the wound in his chest. He let out a scream and then he just crumbled down on his feet.
There were shouts in the restaurant, filled with terror, but suddenly they all just went quiet and a tall, dark-skinned man appeared beside them. Bella didn’t seem to have even noticed, because she had just jumped on her feet the second Edward had started crumbling, crying and shaking uncontrollably as she ran to her father. He took her in his arms, feeling also that an emotional breakdown was near.
“You take care of this?” Charlie asked the man beside him. The angel just nodded quietly. There would be no sign of Edward Cullen’s remains, and none of the present would even remember that he had been there, nor that he had been killed with a gleaming silver blade.
As Charlie escorted her shocked yet relieved daughter out, he knew there would be a lot of questions later, maybe even fights. But just for now he was feeling like any father would after saving their daughter from a very terrifying monster.

A/N: I know that Mervin and Mrs Hyde just used angelic blades to kill a meyerpire in their fic The Wedding Crashers, but I really needed some way for Charlie to be able to kill Edward. The angelic blade was the only thing I could think of, as he probably has no idea of the Colt. I’m sorry if this seems like plagiarizing – I surely did not mean to do so.

Date: 2011-01-28 01:20 am (UTC)Charlie surely needs some love the way he was treated in the books. Plus he just seems perfect for a hunter - not having a family, living by himself and always going to those fish trips... I was first thinking that he might be some kind of Peter Parker with this ability to fry people with his mind and do other awesome tricks like that (hence Bella's "private mind"), but with my current thing with Supernatural, I just couldn't help it but make Charlie a hunter.
Mervin's spitefic was just too delicious to be left alone. I always kind of wanted to do something with it, anyway, but never got to before this.

Date: 2011-02-20 04:05 pm (UTC)The only problem with this story is angels didn't start walking the earth until the first seal broke.
Unless it was a time travelling Cas?

Date: 2011-02-20 04:45 pm (UTC)My theory is that Castiel travelled back in time and gave Charlie the blade because of a stable time loop - Charlie has an angelic blade, and so therefore had to get one in the past from somewhere!

Date: 2011-02-20 06:16 pm (UTC)I guess that you could explain it by saying that Charlie has a part to play in apocalypse, and his actions somehow contribute to Winchesters', so Castiel gives him the blade. But that is again stuff for alternate universes and I won't go there any deeper.
