Title: The Consequence
Author:
[info]elementallove  (aka Martina Wilkinson)
Rating: PG13
Inspiration: Ch. 21- There was no consequence for the Cullens breaking the Volturi's one law
Summary: The Volturi enforce their laws, no matter who breaks them.

Edward hissed. "Join or die, is that it? I suspected as much when we were brought to this room. So much for your laws."

Aro gave him a speculative look. “Our laws, did you say? Tell me, what is our one law?”

Edward gave him a defiant look and if it had been at any other time, the stupid child vampire (Really, he was only around a century old. Did he think he could beat the thousands of years of experience that we hold?) would have been laid out flat on the ground under Alec’s influence. “Vampires must never expose their existence to humans, unless they intend to eat or turn said human.” It sounded like he had memorized the rule, and knowing Carlisle, he probably had made his “children” memorize it.

Aro grinned. “Exactly.” He grabbed Bella by the neck and threw her into Edward’s arms. “Get on with it then.”

The smirk that had graced Edward’s face dissolved immediately. “What...what do you mean?”

Caius rolled his eyes from where he sat lounging on his throne. “Are you stupid, boy? I thought Carlisle only turned intelligent people...or maybe just pretty, young ones. I always wondered why his first turn was a young boy.”

Aro was still grinning, but now it had taken on a lascivious look. “Oh, Carlisle definitely appreciates beauty. But, that’s not the point.” Here he turned to Edward, who was cradling Bella in his arms.

She is a human and you are a vampire. She knows about our existence, knew about it long before now, yet she is still human. So either turn her or kill her. Now.”

Edward was gaping at Aro most unattractively, so Alice stepped forward. “We need time to prepare. Bella is human and she needs to get her affairs in order so her family won’t get too suspicious after she’s turned.”

Caius snorted. “Killing someone doesn’t take preparation, not for us. Just snap her neck and be done with it.”

Edward snapped out of his shock at that and snarled at Caius, who snarled right back and much more fiercely. “Don’t growl at me, you little brat. You broke our one rule. Now, you have to face the consequences. You aren’t above our laws, even if you may think you are.”

Again, Alice tried to change the Volturi’s minds. “If Bella just disappears, her family’s going to want an investigation. We left a note for her father, saying where we were going. He’s going to come to Volterra; he might even find you all out.”

Marcus was looking more bored by the second, but he decided to add his two cents in. Otherwise, they would be here all day, debating whether or not to eat the human and he was getting hungry. “The human doesn’t care about her father or any other humans. She has absolutely no connections to people whatsoever, besides the shallow connection she feels to the you and your ‘family’.”

The human girl looked at him in surprise, the first reaction he had seen from her since Aro had pushed her into the boy’s arms. Correctly guessing why she was surprised, Marcus spared a glance her way before turning back to the young female vampire who was also looking at him in surprise.

He reclined on his throne. “Despite what that little boy may have said, I don’t see relationships. I can look at someone and know every person and item they have an emotional connection to, as well as the strength of said connection. From that information, I can determine how to most effectively destroy that person. For example, you have a connection to this boy, but it only extends so far. If supporting him would put you or your mate in danger, you would leave him in an instant. The only reason you came here and try to save this boy is because you had a vision of him and the human together as vampires and you want that vision to come true.”

Alice again looked at Marcus in surprise, and slight fear. He continued addressing her. “I see how connected you are to your ability. You value it even more than you value your mate, the supposed love of your life. However, you aren’t connected to the human girl beside you. You just need her to make your vision come true.”

The human looked hurt. “Alice, is that true?”

Before she could answer, Caius spoke up. “Shut up. Food shouldn’t talk and I’m getting hungrier by the minute. Now, boy, are you going to turn her or not?”

“No,” Edward said, growling, pushing Bella behind him.

Aro sighed. “I had hoped it wouldn’t come to this, but no matter. Felix, Demetri, if you will.”

Felix grabbed Alice by the throat and pulled her away from Bella and Edward. Demetri grabbed hold of Edward, then lifted him up and slammed him into the ground. His head hit the marble floor, leaving a large crack. He tried to struggle against Demetri, who simply broke both of his legs with one move of his arm.

Once Edward was incapacitated, with Demetri still holding him up as support, Aro walked casually over to Bella, who had been shrieking since Demetri grabbed Edward.

She was trembling now, looking at Aro in fear. Aro smiled at her reassuringly, reaching out to stroke her cheek, before snapping her neck with one hand.

As she fell to the floor, Edward was screaming at the top of his lungs and trying to break free. Demetri got tired of listening to him and broke his jaw to silence him. As he fell to the floor, Felix finally let go of Alice, who walked right past Bella’s lifeless body to Edward. She picked him up, realizing that the Volturi were done with them. It had been either Bella’s life for knowing about their existence or their lives for revealing the secret. The Volturi had chosen for them.

Aro casually waved as she walked out the door with Edward. “Give Carlisle my regards, please,” he called after her, as the other vampires in the room started to descend on the body in the middle of the floor.

Pure, vicious brilliance. This is what fearsome, centuries-old vampires act like. Thank you.
