Kevin blinked. “Oh. Sorry,” he said awkwardly.

Nobody spoke for a few moments. In an attempt to change the mood, Toby asked brightly: “So, uh…how did you meet Kate?”

It worked; Elliot smiled, making his whole face light up again. “We met in a bar. I wasn’t planning on going to a bar but Christian said he had to pick up a friend who was drunk, and he was pretty insistent I come as well. It wasn’t love at first sight when I saw Kate; it was more of a ‘whoa, that girl is hot’ moment. I couldn’t stop staring at her. Anyway, I asked her to dance and she said yes.”

He shared a mischievous grin with Kevin.

“That was when Christian showed up. Turns out the friend he had come to pick up was Kate’s roommate Ana Steele. I’ve got no idea how much she’d had – or what she’d had – but she passed out right in front of us. Christian said he’d take Ana home and carried her out the bar. Kate and I ended up going back to her place.”

Elliot took another gulp of Red Bull. “The sex was awesome. Afterwards, while we were just lying in bed and talking, I found I wanted to know her better – and to see her again. So we made arrangements to meet up on a proper date. When Christian brought Ana back to the flat, I gave Kate a goodbye kiss and – well, that was it.”

“I thought Christian told you he was going to take Ana home?” Toby asked.

“Oh, he did. Turns out he meant his place, not hers.”

The brothers shared uneasy glances.

“He took an unconscious woman back to his place?” Kevin’s voice sounded suspicious. “I’m sorry – I didn’t mean for it to sound like that.”

Elliot shook his head. “It’s OK. When he texted me to tell me she was with him, I texted him back to ask if he got laid – and I was kinda relieved when he said he hadn’t. I don’t think he’d take advantage of an unconscious chick.”

He doesn’t exactly sound convinced about that, Toby thought. From what I’ve seen of Grey, I think he’d have no problem taking advantage of a helpless woman, and I’ve known him for only two days.

“Elliot, can I ask you something weird?” asked Kevin, leaning forwards and resting his hands on his kneed. Toby recognised that position: it was the same one their father used when he was preparing to talk to someone about a potentially difficult subject.

Be careful, Kevin.

“Sure,” Elliot replied casually.

“When Christian said he was taking Ana home, did you feel strange?”

“Strange?”

“I mean, like you shouldn’t get involved or something?”

Elliot was silent for a bit. Then he said slowly: “Actually, yeah, I did. It was like a voice was telling me to back off. It was only there for a second, but when Christian walked out the bar with Ana it was gone. But I’m used to getting vibes like that from him.”

Before Kevin and Toby could ask him what he meant, Mia bounced into the room. “Hi, guys!” she said cheerfully to the Mendozas. “Neither of you are vegetarians, right?”

“No,” Toby replied. “Our dad isn’t either.”

“Oh, that’s good! It’s just that Mom wants to do lasagne tonight and she wanted to make sure you were all OK with eating meat.” Mia shook back her hair. “Mom’s lasagne is legendary, by the way. Everyone who’s ever had it says it’s amazing.”

“It is amazing, by the way,” Elliot added, grinning.

“I have to go now; I’m helping her make it. Bye!” Mia turned around and scampered out of the room.

Elliot shook his head fondly. “She’s not always like this. OK, she’s a perky little ditz, but she doesn’t bounce about the place like Tigger on steroids all the time.”

“Does it only happen when you’ve got guests?” Kevin joked.

“Nope, only happens when Christian’s around – which was pretty much all the time when we were kids.” Elliot shifted around slightly. “She was always happy. I remember when she was a baby, she used to bawl really loudly – and then Christian would walk up to her and touch her and she would just stop crying and smile again.”

“He wanted her to be happy,” Toby heard himself say. He sensed Kevin glance sideways at him, a frown on his face.

Elliot nodded. “Exactly. You should have seen Christian when Mia was a teenager!” He chuckled softly, shaking his head again. “She had a lot of boys interested in her, but none of them even got near her because Christian was so damn protective.”

“Nothing wrong with that,” Kevin said. “Toby and I would probably be like that if Michael was a girl.”

“Yeah, but there’s protective and there’s protective. Know what I mean? I didn’t want anyone breaking my baby sister’s heart, but Christian was scary.”

The doorbell rang and all three young men jump slightly. Once they realized what they’d done, they laughed awkwardly.

“That’s probably Dad,” said Toby.

Mia’s voice floated from the hallway. “Hello? Oh it’s you! Come in!”

“Thanks, Mia,” Robert replied. “Do you know where my sons are?”

“We’re just through here, Dad!” Toby called. “Sorry, Elliot, but he’s probably going to want to have a word with us.”

“All secretive, huh?”

“That’s our dad for you.” Kevin grinned ruefully.

“I heard that.”

Kevin looked at Elliot and gulped heavily, twisting a finger in his collar. Both Toby and Elliot bit back smiles.

“So you think that Christian’s been manipulating Mia’s emotions since she was a baby?”

“From what Elliot says, yes.” Toby folded his arms. “Did you notice anything unusual about her emotions, Dad?”

Frowning, Robert shook his head. “I didn’t think to look at Mia’s colours – they don’t seem to be acting strangely around Christian. I’ll keep an eye on them.”

“Did you get the stones?” Kevin asked.

“I did. Both of you take one bloodstone and one blue quartz from the bag; keep them in your pocket at all times while we’re here, especially when you’re in the same room as Christian.” Robert pulled his mobile out of his pocket. “I need to call Mark and tell him what’s been going on.”

He was in the middle of informing Mark about the bar incident when Kevin’s phone rang. He quietly left the bedroom in order to answer it.

“Kevin? Oh, thank God. I just tried to call your dad but he’s on the phone.”

“Uncle Jay? What’s wrong?” Even as Kevin said the words he felt a cold prickle of fear.

“It’s Michael. He went into the garden to get an empty cup I left outside but he didn’t come back in. I looked out the window and he was just lying there. He’s unconscious; I’ve called an ambulance and they’ll be here soon. I – I don’t know what happened.”

“What the hell did you do?”

Kevin charged down the stairs and straight towards Grey, who was standing outside the living room. He didn’t even register that the front door was open or that Ana was nearby; he just grabbed Grey by his shirt and shoved him against the wall, ignoring Ana’s shocked shriek.

“What the hell,” he hissed, “have you done to my brother?”

Christian didn’t answer. His eyes were wide with surprise and he was staring somewhere behind Kevin’s left shoulder.

He’s not looking at me.

Kevin released Grey’s shirt and turned around to see the barrel of a gun pointing right at him.

Okay, WTF!!!?

The fact that Christian's been manipulating Mia since she was a baby is scary... and explains her unnatural perkiness in a completely horrifying way.

I like them. And they seem to be a functional family that all have distinct personalities.
