Stargate SG-1 is one of my favourite sci-fi shows. It ran for ten seasons, and had a few spinoffs and made-for-TV-movies. The franchise is, itself, a followup to Roland Emmerich's 1994 film Stargate.
The series posits a manmade wormhole "gate system" was built by the ancient ancestors of humans to seed life on multiple planets in multiple galaxies, but the Ancients' gate system and technology was later hijacked in the Milky Way Galaxy by a parasitic conqueror race known as the Goa'uld. The Ancients have long since vanished, leaving the Tau'ri (the Goa'uld name for the modern humans of Earth) as the only race advanced enough to take on the Goa'uld.
