Summary: Alec really doesn’t like it when you try to attack his sister.

“No!” Alice shrieked as Edward lunged forward, his hands curled into claws.

“Restrain them.” Caius’s voice was like a whipcrack.

Nobody in the Volturi moved—but Edward dropped all the same. His face, a vicious snarl, suddenly went slack, his eyes losing all focus, and he fell to his knees, his arms slumping to his sides. His jaw was unhinged, and within a single second, he was completely motionless, staring off into nothing. I could do nothing but gaze at him in horror; he didn’t look like a statue, as I’d always seen before when he went still. He looked like a corpse.

“Thank you, Alec,” Aro said mildly.

I turned to glance wildly at Alice—but was shocked to see that she too had fallen to her knees, that same empty look in her eyes.

“Alice?” I whispered, reaching out with a shaking hand to touch her shoulder. She didn’t respond to my voice or my touch. I gripped her shoulder and shook her—and shrieked when she flopped like a ragdoll and simply fell over like a marionette that had had its strings cut. Her head hit the stone floor with a painful-sounding thunk, but she gave no response to even that.

“What did you do to them?!” I shrieked, unable to keep the hysteria out of my voice and staring wide-eyed at Alec, who was merely gazing languidly at Edward and Alice.

Aro chuckled indulgently, shaking his head at the two of them. “Really, they were being rude—attempting to attack my guard! My Jane, no less—that was simply uncalled for! I simply wished to test Jane’s ability on you, Bella! Such behavior. Carlisle clearly did not teach him manners.” He tsked a few times, then glanced up at me. “Now, where were we before we were so rudely interrupted?”
