Jacob jerked his head back around to face her, his expression livid. “Did you just call me a coward?” he growled.

“Well, if the shoe fits,” she sneered.

Jacob’s fists clenched hard. “Yes, I suppose it does,” he said flatly. “I’m such a coward. In fact, I’m so cowardly, I’m the one who managed to get to that black-haired vampire first and deliver the killing blow when he ran.”

He took a step forward, and Bella instinctively took one back. “I’m so cowardly I’ve been getting only two or three hours of sleep a night so I can run all over the state chasing after Victoria—a vampire you’ve begged me repeatedly not to chase because she’s just so dangerous. You, who fainted at just the mere thought she might be after you.”

Bella flushed darkly. “I—I have good reason to be scared of her, she’s a lot more powerful than I am!” she protested.

“Oh, and according to you, all five of us don’t stand a chance against her,” Jacob shot back. “Yet we go up against her anyway—for you, I might add.” He spat on the floor at her feet. “I’ll relay your opinion on us when I report back. I’m sure all of us will be glad to know you think we’re cowards for not wanting to overstep our boundaries and cause a serious problem with a treaty that you don’t know a thing about.”
