Summary: Billy Black is not impressed with Bella Swan. At all.
Billy’s eyes narrowed briefly, but then he smiled.
“In that case,” he said, his voice light but with an unmistakable trace of wry amusement laced throughout it, “I think we’ll head out when Jake gets back in.” His eyes bored into mine. “Even though Charlie isn’t there, I haven’t been down to that spot in a long time. We used to fish there a lot. Maybe we’ll just stop by and admire the view.”
My eyes widened. “In the rain?” I managed, struggling to remain calm and making sure I sounded incredulous to try and put him off the idea.
Billy’s grin only widened. “It’s at its prettiest in the rain. I heard there was going to be a thunderstorm—lightning across the water is amazing,” he drawled, folding his hands across his lap. “And if it’s going to be undisturbed by any fishermen, it’ll be even better.”
“That doesn’t seem safe,” I blurted, my mind working frantically. “Sitting out around all those trees in a thunderstorm—isn’t that dangerous?”
Billy continued to gaze evenly at me. “Perhaps,” he said, shrugging. He settled more comfortably into his chair. “Any idea what direction this wonderful new fishing spot is? North? South? I find it hard to believe Charlie wouldn’t tell you even that—what if you had an emergency or were hurt?” His eyes hardened infinitesimally.
“Somewhere south,” I snapped, my increasing panic and his implication making me ruder.
I felt my stomach drop when his expression became smugly triumphant. “In that case, if it isn’t too much trouble, Jake and I will just wait here for a little bit.”
My heart thudded and I gripped the counter tightly. “I said he’d be a while, Billy—he’s not gonna be back until after dark, and I don’t—”
But Billy cut off my babbling. “No, he won’t be back after dark. Charlie is just as safety-conscious as you are about lightning and thunderstorms, Bella. If he’s fishing in the south, then he already got caught in that storm. It’s coming up from Taholah—and Charlie never fishes in a thunderstorm.”
I had to force my jaw to unclench before I could speak again. “You just came to deliver the fish fry. You’ve delivered it. I’m sorry you missed Charlie,” I ground out.
Billy regarded me levelly. “Am I not allowed to shoot the breeze with an old friend? ‘Sides, Jake’s been wanting to see you again, since you never called like you promised. Been too busy?”
“Yes,” I said quickly, pouncing on the new opportunity and ignoring his insinuations this time. “Yeah, I’ve been really busy. In fact, I was just gonna go up and do some homework, so I really can’t say down here and talk while you wait—”
“Stop it.” Billy’s suddenly hard, cold tone made my voice dry up. “I know you know I saw him.”
I bristled the way Billy said “him”, but he ignored me. He was suddenly all smiles again. “You keep going on like this, Bella, and I’m gonna start thinking you don’t want me to see my good friend Charlie. I don’t know why you would.” His smile was tight now. “After all—it’s not like you have anything to hide.”
