--- Jane POV ---

"Now?"

"No, Felix."

"Now?"

"No, Felix."

"... How about...?" Felix almost fell off the wall as I sent a shock of pain through him, prompting Demitri, who had been monitoring the goings on down in the palazzo as though it were a production of newly-discovered Borodin opera, to smirk.

"You'll go when I say to," I informed the simpleton, who glared at me; I suppose it was a symptom of his human idiocy that even vampire venom could not completely burn away. I might have chastised him again, if only for my own gratification, but Demitri held up a hand.

"She's making her move. Should I follow?"

I shook my head, reminded of my master's instructions. "No. Aro says that Alice is determined to bring her 'brother' back into the Cullen fold and overestimates her abilities to read our intentions. She'll come out into the open once she sees that we haven't torn the human bait limb-from-limb."

"How does Aro know she'll risk that? He's never touched her," Felix argued.

"Marcus saw it," Demitri explained before I could punish the idiot for daring to question his betters. "Said they were like Jane and Alec."

"Huh. They aren't nearly as attractive together," said Felix.

"Of course not," I sniffed, mollified by the compliment. Felix was too stupid to say anything other than what he actually thought. It was rather nice to have someone around who you were not always second-guessing, I supposed...

"And there goes the bait..." We three watched at the human cow Alice had thought to distract us with lumbered through palazzo toward the clock tower, just as the midday bells began tolling. "... дерьмо, that's pathetic."

Felix stared, gape-mouthed (which was not all that different from how he usually looked) as she bowled over an elderly aunty and nearly caught the Reverenda Madre of Sant'Agostino in the eye with her elbow before splashing into the fountain and floundering about like a distressed hippopotamus. "Jane, I thought Aro said not to use your gift on the human girl until he could watch."

"I'm not," I said, simply too horrified by the farce to do anything else. "She's doing that all on her own." Had I any blood of my own left, I would probably have blushed in embarrassment. As it was, I was sorely tempted to let Felix have his murder-obsessed way with the lot, if only to spare our kind the shame of association.

"About time," Demitri commented as the human cow slammed into Edward, who had just stepped, melodramatically, onto the steps at the base of the tower, sending them both careening back over the threshold. "Shall we apprehend them now?"

"Yes, ick, do," I muttered, shielding my eyes and waving them on. "Might as well get this over with. I'll wait until Alice shows up.  No point in closing the trap before then."

The two of them nodded and, with Felix following Demitri, flowed over the wall into the palazzo. Watching them go, their dark cloaks stark against the red of the human cattle milling about, I wondered if my master's sense of dramatics was that contagious. 'The things he makes me do because he's bored...'
