Fic: Prerogative

Title: Prerogative
Author: kermit_thefrog
Fandom: Twilight
Rating: G
Word Count: 1,053
Summary: Bella refuses to let Alice bully her anymore.
Inspiration:  Outtake from Twilight, "Extended Prom Remix."
Author's Note: Meyer's sick outtake where Alice bullies Bella into putting on the prom dress she chose for her made me angry. So I invented Backbone!Bella to do what she does best--stand up for herself and thwart the twee little bitch.

Prerogative

It should have clicked in my head earlier, I know, but I really had tried to give Alice the benefit of the doubt. Surely, as my friend, she was only shopping with me to help take my mind off the horrors of the past couple of months.

The insanely impractical shoes were probably her way of reassuring me that I’d be out of the walking cast in no time. And the “makeover” was just something she loved to do, and I always liked how my hair ended up looking once she and Rosalie were done with it. Vain, yes, but they were more talented than I was at that sort of thing.

But once I caught sight of the dress and corset, the pieces fell into place.

“Alice,” I said, my heart sinking as I realized the implications of everything we’d done earlier. “This isn’t for the prom, is it?”

She blinked, then her face burst into a gleeful smile. “Oh, Bella! You guessed! Well, that’s a pity because now it won’t be such a surprise, but yes! Edward wants so much for you to go! You don’t really want to miss out on the prom, Bella! You should have every kind of human experience that I never had!”

My jaw dropped. So, that was why she was trying to force me into ridiculous shoes and a corset that looked tight enough to re-break my newly healed ribs. Never mind if I ended up back in the ER before the night was through, Alice Cullen wanted to live vicariously through me!

I put my foot down—metaphorically rather than literally.

“Alice, I am not putting that corset on, even if Jasper does try and hold me down,” I said firmly. “And by the way, nice of you to threaten physical harm to someone who was beaten six ways to Sunday by a vampire not two months ago.”

Rosalie raised her eyebrows, and Alice looked fleetingly uncomfortable.

“I’m sorry, Bella,” she said, then perked up again. “But please just try on the dress! It’ll look so pretty on you!”

I shook my head. “No. First off, that dress is ridiculous. I wouldn’t wear that to a Renaissance fair, let alone my own prom. Couldn’t you have found something a little more modern? Or, oh, I don’t know, let me pick it out?

Now Alice was pouting. “Edward told me to find you something beautiful and blue, and that’s what I did. Of course, I’m happy to exchange it for something else, but there’s no time right now. The prom starts in three hours, and—”

“Alice!” I stomped my good foot just to get her attention. “Read my lips. I. Am. Not. Going. All I want to do is lie on my couch, resting up my leg like my doctor recommended I do, and watch TV. Charlie has been wanting me around more often since Phoenix, and I’d actually prefer to hang out with him tonight, rather than lurch around a high school gym with a walking cast on my leg!”

Alice was now giving me the Bambi eyes. “But—but Bella, the prom! It’s—”

“It’s the junior prom!” I snapped, sick and tired of having this conversation with her already. “I can always attend my senior one!

"And that,” I added, seeing Alice’s face light up again, “was not me saying I was absolutely going to go. If I choose to, I will, and I will buy my own dress and shoes, and I will go with Edward because he asks me to go, because even boyfriends are supposed to ask their girlfriends. In fact, since he didn’t ask me and I didn’t say yes, I don’t have to go to the prom at all. Because nobody asked me to go.”

Alice opened her mouth to speak, but I glared at her in my best Edward impression. She sullenly crossed her arms over her chest and averted her gaze from me.

“Well, I don’t know what Edward’s going to say about all this,” she said, her perfect mouth curved downwards. “After all, he went through all that trouble to make you a romantic gourmet dinner at your house, and now—”

“He--!” I sputtered. This was just too much. I turned to Rose, who was watching me with something like respect on her face for the first time since we’d met. “Rosalie, can I borrow your phone, please?”

She handed it over immediately, and I gave her a small smile of gratitude as I dialed my house number.

“Charlie?” I said the moment he picked up. “Is Edward there?”

“Yes,” Charlie replied, sounding displeased. “He’s been a regular Wolfgang Puck for the past four hours. I can’t even get in there to get a glass of water.”

“Well, can you give him a message?” I said.

Charlie sighed, and I could guess why.

“Dad,I want you to tell him I want him to leave right now,” I said in a low voice. “His sisters ambushed me and tried to make me go to the prom, and that’s why he’s over there cooking. He wanted us to have a romantic meal before they shoved me in the limo.”

“What?” Charlie sounded downright indignant now. “How dare they—Bella, you come right home. I’ll take care of Cullen.”

“I’m on my way,” I said. Then, before he hung up, I had an idea. “And Dad, tell Edward to leave the food. I think we should at least enjoy the meal he went through so much trouble to make.”

Charlie snorted with approval. “Sounds good to me. I’ll see you soon, honey.”

I snapped the phone shut with a triumphant smile, handed it back to Rosalie, and gave Alice one last steely look.

“I’m returning the shoes on Monday,” I added for good measure. “And until you learn that I mean no when I say it, I don’t plan on going shopping with you ever again.”

Alice stuck her tiny nose in the air and gazed at the ceiling with tear-filled eyes. I ignored her.

“I’ll drive you home, Bella,” Rosalie volunteered.

Yay for Bella with backbone! This is a scene I wish had happened in canon!

She is so much better as a vertabrate.

First, I cheered. Then, I felt sad, because Bella could never display this sort of sense and courage, nor would she ever be so likeable.

But reading this kinda makes up for it, I guess!

Rosalie does seem like the kind of person who'd prefer Backbone!Bella to the canon version. They might even get on, if this Bella doesn't have the whole blonde hangup...

I love this Bella. If she did something like this in canon, I'd forgive a lot of what she's done. XD

Yay for Backbone!Bella! :-D I bet she and Rosalie and Emmett could get into a lot of trouble. ;-) Well done!

Wonderful! Serves the bitch Alice right. I absolutely loathe it when she makes Bella have all these dresses and parties and Bella just lets her walk all over her. The series would have been so much better with Backbone!Bella.

All right, Bella! She should've definitely been resting that leg (which would've been the logical, medically sound thing to do) instead of gallivanting all over the place with Eddiekins and Alice.

True love, my ass. If he really loved her, he'd have visited her at home, and tended to her while she recuperates, rather than dragging her to prom.
